Trump Claims US–Iran Peace Talks, Tehran Denies as Tensions Rattle Oil Markets

US President Donald Trump said that the US and Iran have held talks on the “complete and total resolution of hostilities” in the Middle East.

In a social media post, Trump said that he was calling off his threatened attacks on Iran’s power plants by five days. This move by Trump seemed to ease tensions in the Middle East as the prices of oil and gas declined shortly.

However, the Iranian parliament speaker rejected the claims by Trump about talks with the US. The speaker said that Trump’s claims were “fake news” and that the US was attempting to “manipulate” the world’s oil prices by spreading misinformation.

In his latest statement on the tensions between the two countries, Trump said that Iran has “one more chance” to make peace. This statement by Trump was seen as a cautionary one.

This comes at a time when Trump issued an ultimatum to Iran on Saturday night. Trump said that Iran should open the Strait of Hormuz in 48 hours. Trump said that if Iran failed to comply with his demands, the US would “obliterate” Iran’s power plants.
